Characteristics of a Great Musical Arrangement

Finally, I’ve got some time to read this great book about music arrangement - Arranging Music for the Real World. At page 4, the author spells out four special qualities of a satisfactory musical arrangement:

  1. Provides contrasts between high and low sounds
  2. Avoids heavily doubled parts and emphasizes solo sections
  3. Is sufficiently transparent to allow the musical lines to be clearly heard
  4. All of the instruments do not play throughout

These definitely resonate with my experience of learning and making music arrangement. The particular song arrangement that I am amazed and admired is Everything (artist: Misia, arranger and producer: Keiichi Tomita). I listened to it again and again.. and it really blows my mind every single time. You bet, the song has all the top qualities stated above. Enjoy the music video below:
